Southdown Comics- The Southdown Comics are a part of our Super Hero theme. This bulletin board is in our cafeteria. The lesson of the comic strip is making healthy breakfast choices. The villains, Dawn the Donut and Chocolate Cheat were designed by the students. They are convincing these girls to put chocolate milk in Choco Puffs and to grab a donut for breakfast. Our Super Heroes are helping them chose options in our cafeteria with less sugar and fat. The faces have been replaced with cartoons for student protection. On the actual bulletin board they student faces are included.

PE Password- My good friend Margaret Robelee invented the PE Password. The idea is that a secret password is placed inside a folder and students have to look inside to find out what the password is. Margaret places her folders around the building. Mine are in the cafeteria. In my folders there is a picture and three words - the students have to look at the picture and figure out what the password is. It's a great way to reinforce PE academic vocabulary. For may students, I will have them write down the password and put their answer in a jar and have a raffle at the end of each week.

Are you Smarter than a 4th Grader-At the end of this year, our students took an SLO (Student Learning Objective) assessment. As a means of reviewing for the assessment, each morning a 4th grade student came to the front office and played "Are You Smarter than a 4th Grader" against our principal Mr. Oshrin. I asked a question over the school intercom and the contestant that buzzed in first got to answer. If the answer was incorrect the other contestant got to answer. The questions spanned the 2nd-4th grade curriculum. The student volunteer names were put in a hat and the contestants were chosen at random. The final score this year was 100- 70 in favor of the 4th graders.
Jeopardy
In preparation for the student learning objective assessments, we are reviewing as a school by playing jeopardy each morning. Mrs. Marino, our principal, and Mr. Murphy, our building aide, are the contestants. The categories are; Food Groups, Name that Muscle, Which Component of Fitness is it?, and How is it measured? I ask the question over the intercom while the contestants hum the Jeopardy theme in the background. They buzz in when they know the answer. If they don't know the answer, classrooms can buzz the front office to give the answer. The first class to get it correct can choose who to give the points to. Even our K-1 students are able to answer some questions! One first grade teacher pulled out an action figure toy to show her students where the abdominal muscles were!

Jump Rope Chants
Our principal is retiring. We had our students write jump rope chants for her. That is her head on a cartoon of a jump roper. She loved it and our students enjoyed the writing assignment. "Mrs. Marino is the best! She can really rock a sweater vest! When she leaves many tears will be dropping. How many tissue will we need for mopping?"

Teaching Muscle Groups
Students can answer the question of the week on our website to get entered into our model contest. If a student answers the question correctly, their name is put in a hat. At the end of the week we pull a name out and take their picture. Their picture is turned into a full size photo that we use for muscle groups, skill posters, etc. To make a full size poster simply paste the picture into an Excel document and drag it to the size you want. I would suggest using black and white though! This took a lot of ink!

Fill the Bucket
This bulletin board is in our cafeteria. The theme of filling the bucket is based on the story "How Full is Your Bucket?" by Tom Rath and Mary Reckmeyer. Essentially, the story is about kindness and happiness. Students learn that being kind is like filling someones bucket- making them happy, and being unkind dips into the bucket-making someone sad. Our cafeteria and recess monitors give out splashes for our bucket daily for acts of kindness that we identify to them at the beginning of the month. Each month has a different splash. As you can see, this month is shamrocks. Last month was hearts. You get the idea!

The Legend of Milo and the Calf
This bulletin board teaches the overload principle for muscular strength through the Legend of Milo of Croton. Students that answered the question of the week on our eboard got their picture taken doing muscular strength exercises and activities. During this unit we used Therabands to teach muscle groups and muscular strength.

Vocabulary Word of the Week
I put a new PE vocabulary word on a bulletin board in the hallway each week. One day, our custodian Frank, commented on the dullness of my board! I hated to admit he was right! This was how I fixed it! The kids love Mr. Frank and each week I change his voice bubble. He doesn't know it yet but next month he will be wearing a leotard in a yoga position.

Gym Jefferson's Heart Healthy Adventure
This bulletin board teaches the students how blood carries oxygen through the circulatory system and drops it off at the muscles to be used for exercise. The students then travel through the circulatory system in the gym on their scooters.

Shoe Tying Tree
Tired of tying shoes! The shoe tying tree is the answer. Cut out sneakers or leaves and give one to each student that can tie their shoe. Use old sneakers for a practice station in the gym, at recess or any other time the children have free. Upload a shoe tying video from Youtube to put on your website, PTA Facebook page, eboard.

Physical Activity Postcards
Promote moderate to vigorous physical activity outside your gymnasium with physical activity postcards. Students bring in pictures showing activity. On the postcard they write who is in the picture, what activity they are doing, and where it takes place.

Monthly Fitness Calender
For the month of January, we are highlighting muscular strength and endurance. On this calendar, we are teaching that students need to do push-ups and planks three times a week to increase strength and endurance. At the end of the month we will do a post test to see how if there was in increase in strength and endurance. This calender is on our eboard as well.
